The Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben—feats of art and architecture that have come to represent beloved destinations across the globe. San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is no different, except that thousands of drivers shuttle across this 9,000 ft. long behemoth suspension bridge every day as they go from San Francisco to Marin County.
On this day in history construction began in 1933 on what would become the world's most photographed bridge. Filmmakers love the scenic Golden Gate Bridge as well, and why wouldn't they? In fog and sunshine, with a backdrop of rolling hills and the San Francisco Bay below, the bridge is a national treasure. As O. Henry quipped, "East is East, and West is San Francisco!"
