Nolan, who has been a longtime supporter of shooting on film (versus digital), said of the special release:

The immersive quality of the image is second to none, drawing the audience into the action in the most intense way possible.

In a recent Fandango survey, Dunkirk was named one of the top-five most anticipated films of the summer. In 70MM, audiences will feel they are a part of the race against time to rescue 400,000 British and Allied troops trapped by enemy forces on the beaches of Dunkirk during World War II.

A full list of 70MM theaters in both the U.S. and Canada may be found on the official Dunkirk website at dunkirkmovie.com. Tickets for regular format showings will also be available beginning 9:00 a.m. EDT, Friday, July 7.

Dunkirk opens in theaters July 21.
