Mario Lopez Joins “Extra”
(January 11, 2007 - Los Angeles) — EXTRA! EXTRA! Mario Lopez, who danced his way into the hearts and homes of millions of Americans each week on “Dancing with the Stars,” joins “Extra” as a co-host of the weekend edition and daily show correspondent. As the weekend show’s co-host, Lopez, who has been a special correspondent and guest host for “Extra” in the past, will appear alongside Tanika Ray. Lopez’s “Extra” debut will be next week on the red carpet at the Golden Globes.“Extra’s” Senior Executive Producer Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey says, “Mario is a rapidly rising star and a dynamic personality on and off camera. I’ve had my eye on him for years, and I am thrilled to officially welcome him to the ‘Extra’ family.”In addition to his stint on “Dancing with the Stars,” Lopez has been tapped to star in ABC Family’s original movie “Holidays in Handcuffs,” has inked a talent holding deal with The CW and was named the host of the 2007 Miss America Pageant. Additionally, he is a recurring commentator for HBO Boxing and a roving reporter on Showtime's "EliteXC," which will premiere on February 10. Mario recently starred on two episodes of the popular series “Nip/Tuck” and was just cast to guest star on "George Lopez."Born in San Diego, Lopez began his career on the television series “A.K.A. Pablo.” He became well known to television audiences through his roles on “Saved by the Bell” and “Pacific Blue” as well as a host of “The Other Half.” He portrayed Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis in the telefilm “Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story,” and his film credits include “Colors,” “Depraved” and “Eastside.” He additionally co-produced and starred in the 2002 independent film, “Outta Time.”Tune in to “Extra” tomorrow, Friday, January 12 as Mario is welcomed to the “Extra” family.
