Warner Bros. Pictures Italy’s “Romanzo Criminale” Leads The Davids
(April 28, 2006 – Burbank, CA) – At the 50th Annual David di Donatello Awards on April 21 in Rome, Warner Bros. Pictures Italy’s film ”Romanzo Criminale” (“Crime Novel”) won in eight categories, more than any other film nominated this year.
Among the categories in which the film received awards, known as the David, are Best Screenplay and the David Giovani Award, also called the Young David Award, which is chosen by Italian high school students.
Chosen by the Academia del Cinema Italiano (Italian Film Academy), The David Awards are the main national film award in Italy, equivalent to the Oscars.
“Romanzo Criminale” follows a criminal known as The Lebanese who has a dream to conquer the underworld of Rome. To fulfill his dreams, he puts together a ruthless and highly organized gang whose progress and changes in leadership take place over a 25 year period from the 1970s into the 1990s. The gang’s history is inseparably intertwined with the dark history of modern Italy: terrorism, kidnappings and corruption at the highest levels of government. Throughout these years Police Lieutenant Scialoia sticks to the gang’s trail, trying both to bring them to justice and to win the heart of Patrizia, the gang leader’s girlfriend. The film is based on the novel by Giancarlo De Cataldo.
