Warner Bros. Studios Announces 2008 Burbank Youth Enrichment Program Scholarship & Internship Winners
(March 12, 2008 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. Studios has announced local high school seniors Yvette Melara and Diana Shaginian as the 2008 Burbank Youth Enrichment Program Scholarship & Internship winners.
Warner Bros. will provide a $10,000 college scholarship to each of the students, coupled with four consecutive, paid summer internships at the Studio in their specific areas of interest. Melara, a senior at Providence High School, will pursue her passion for filmmaking and editing, while Shaginian, a senior at Burbank High School, will focus on the business and legal side of the Studio’s operations.
“Winning this scholarship proved to me that I have the ability and talent to go far, and knowing I've just become a part of something so great is indescribable,” said Melara.
“I am thankful and appreciative for being chosen as the winner of the Burbank Youth Enrichment Program Scholarship,” said Shaginian. “The opportunity to be an intern at a company like Warner Bros. is truly remarkable.”
In the two years since the Program began, eight local students have been awarded scholarships and internships, and the Studio received a record number of applications this year. Applicants are evaluated on their academic performance as well as their interest in pursuing careers in the entertainment industry.
These scholarships and internships are a component of the Burbank Youth Enrichment Program, which was created following a community survey in which Burbank residents called for Warner Bros. to continue to create jobs and focus new resources on education and job training for youth. The Program builds upon the Studio’s longstanding partnership with the Burbank community by providing local students with on-the-job opportunities to explore the myriad career options within the company.
“Warner Bros. continually seeks out new ways to meet the community’s needs, and we can’t think of a better way to do this than to provide entertainment industry education and job training to our local youth,” said Michelle Crozier, Vice President, Corporate Responsibility, Warner Bros. Entertainment. “The scholarships are a great way to convey our support for the students, but the internships are where we demonstrate our commitment to their career development and continued success. We are truly invested in these students and their futures—futures we hope they will spend here with us at Warner Bros.”
This year, Warner Bros. celebrates 80 years as a proud member of the Burbank community. The company continues to support its hometown through programs that promote youth enrichment, civic engagement and environmental stewardship.
