About the Films
“Catwoman”
Patience Philips is dead – and more alive than ever. Murdered after she learns the secret behind a cosmetic firm’s anti-aging cream, she’s revived and empowered by mystical felines. Now she’s on the slinky prowl for adventure and revenge. Academy Award® winner Halle Berry (Actress in a Leading Role, “Monster’s Ball”) plays the sleek, whip-cracking feline fatale, Benjamin Bratt is a cop torn between romance and duty and Sharon Stone is an ice-blooded supermodel with something to hide in a kicky and stylish “Catwoman.” With catlike grace, a knack for landing on her feet, a passion for sushi and a loathing for dogs, Berry unsheathes action with attitude.
“Creepshow”
Two macabre masters - writer Stephen King and director George A. Romero - conjure up five shocking yarns, each a virtuoso exercise in the ghouls-and-gags style of classic '50s horror comics. A murdered man emerges from the grave for Father's Day cake. A meteor's ooze makes everything ... grow. A professor selects his wife as a snack for a crated creature. A scheming husband plants two lovers up to their necks in terror. A malevolent millionaire with an insect phobia becomes the prey of a cockroach army. Add the spirited performances of a fine cast (Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, E.G. Marshall and King himself) and the ghoulish makeup wizardry of Tom Savini. Let the “Creepshow” begin.
“Dead Calm”
Take an ocean voyage of full-masted fright with “Dead Calm.” Thriller specialist Philip Noyce (“Patriot Games,” “The Saint”) directs three splendid actors – Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane – in riveting performances. Joe and Rae Ingham (Neill and Kidman) do the right thing and rescue the half-delirious sole survivor (Zane) of a crippled schooner. But soon the stranger will plunge the unwary pair into an intense battle of cat and mouse. And life or death.
“Freddy vs. Jason”
The slicer versus the slasher? Two titans of terror going at it mano-a-machete? They’re gonna kill each other a lot! The horror (and wicked fun) begins when Freddy realizes he can’t haunt dreams because folks no longer fear him. So he enlists Jason to do a little killing on his behalf on Elm Street. Presto, the fear is back – and so is Freddy. One problem: Jason isn’t about to stop offing people. And another: Freddy isn’t about to let Jason rule Elm Street. This means war. “Freddy Vs. Jason.” Winner kills all.
“The New World Extended Cut”
Powhatan tribal people stare in wonder as three ships approach shore. It’s a story every schoolchild knows; the story of Capt. John Smith (Colin Farrell) and Pocahontas (Q’orianka Kilcher). Now, as told by filmmaker Terrence Malick (“Badlands,” “Days of Heaven,” “The Thin Red Line”) in this extended version with more than 30 minutes of footage unseen in theaters – it’s a story you never imagined. Working in part from first-hand histories and adding his extraordinary sense of image and human drama, Malick crafts a visceral, spellbinding tale of the Jamestown settlement, of cultures connecting and of deadly consequences when connections fray. Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer also star.
“Over the Top”
“Rocky” and “Rambo” star Sylvester Stallone gives fans another reason to stand up and cheer. He stars as hard-luck big-rig trucker Lincoln Hawk and takes us under the glaring Las Vegas lights for all the boisterous action of the World Armwrestling Championship in “Over the Top” (co-scripted by Stallone).
Relying on wits and willpower, Hawk tries to rebuild his life by capturing the first-place prize money – and the love of the son (David Mendenhall) he abandoned years earlier into the keeping of his rich, ruthless father-in-law (Robert Loggia). He matches muscles with some of the game’s gargantuan greats – and grips you tightly with a rousing finale in crowd-pleasing “Rocky” style.
“The Postman”
In 2013 there are no highways, no I-ways, no dreams of a better tomorrow, only scattered survivors across what was once the United States. Into this apocalyptic wasteland comes an enigmatic drifter with a mule, a knack for Shakespeare and something yet undiscovered: the power to inspire hope.
Two-time Academy Award® winner (Directing and Best Picture, “Dances with Wolves”) Kevin Costner directs and plays a wayfarer in a world where might makes right – but destined to lead a heroic rebellion where right makes right. Sweeping battle scenes, breathtaking wilderness vistas and touching moments of personal triumphs combine to ensure “The Postman” delivers.
“Snakes on a Plane”
A red-eye 747 flight out of Hawaii swooshes along at 30,000 feet toward L.A. Suddenly, there’s no pilot. Later, there’s no co-pilot. There are, however, snakes – hissing, slithering, attacking, venomous snakes. A crime boss has subverted security and planted the reptiles in order to bring the plane down, along with a witness slated to testify against the mobster in L.A. Can the FBI agent (Samuel L. Jackson) guarding the witness rally what’s left of the crew and passengers for a reptilian rumble in the jumbo? Buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy fight.
“Sphere”
Excitement runs deep when U.S. officials find and isolate a huge spacecraft that plunged into the Pacific – 300 years earlier. What is the craft’s origin? Can there still be living intelligence aboard? Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone and Samuel L. Jackson lead an underwater expedition to the mysterious object in this suspenseful adventure directed by Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”) and based on Michael Crichton’s novel. Step aboard for a new dimension in thrills – and prepare to come face to face with unnamable terror as near as your own thoughts!
“Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2003)
Get help! That’s a good idea when carefree friends traveling the back roads of Texas run into trouble. So they ask for assistance at an eerie, ramshackle farmhouse. That’s a bad idea – one that cranks up the whirring, ripping terror of this fear-choked re-imagining of the cult fave “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Producer Michael Bay (“Transformers”), director Marcus Nispel (2009’s “Friday the 13th”) and their filmmaking team bring edgy contemporary style to a gory frightmare. Jessica Biel leads the cast of road trippers who must battle the spinning steel of monstrous Leatherface. Join them for a savage game of hide and shriek.
