Paul Broucek Named President, Music, Warner Bros. Pictures
(December 8, 2009 – Burbank, CA) – Veteran music executive and producer Paul Broucek has been named President, Music, Warner Bros. Pictures, it was announced today by Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
Effective immediately, Broucek will be responsible for the overall creative direction of Warner Bros. Pictures’ music operations and also oversee the department’s administrative, production and day-to-day business functions, reporting directly to Robinov. He’ll further be charged with the strategic development and deployment of music-related initiatives to meet the needs of Warner Bros. Pictures’ producers and directors. In addition, Broucek will have oversight of New Line Records, serving as its President, and reporting to Toby Emmerich, President, New Line Cinema, regarding that business.
“Music plays an incredibly important and creative role in filmmaking,” said Robinov. “In addition to being incredibly talented, Paul has terrific instincts and relationships throughout the music and film industries and can help us evolve our theatrical music operation, both from a business and a creative aspect. I really look forward to working with him.”
“It is great that Paul is coming here to lead both the Warner Bros. Pictures music team and, with Jason Linn, the New Line Records team,” said Emmerich. ”Having worked with Paul for over a decade at New Line, I know that he is a collaborative, dynamic executive with a proven track record in film and television music. We’re looking forward to having Paul expand upon the high standards set by the talented people at Warner Bros. Pictures music and New Line Records, as well as building a premiere film and television soundtrack label.”
Prior to this appointment, Broucek most recently launched Common Market, a music consulting, production and publishing company specializing in productions for film, television, records, online, commercials, games and new media. He also formed a creative partnership with record producer Salaam Remi for a lineup of film projects, including New Line Cinema’s “Sex and the City 2,” and served as executive producer of the Javier Navarrete score for the upcoming martial arts western “The Warrior’s Way.” Common Market will continue its operations; Broucek will step away from the day-to-day operations of that company.
Previously, Broucek headed the creative music team at New Line Cinema for 12 years, having served as President, Music from 2004-2008 when New Line Cinema was folded into Warner Bros. Pictures. During this time, he also served as the Executive Music Producer (along with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh) for the Academy Award-winning “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy--”The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King”--which won three of the four Academy Awards for which they were nominated in music categories. Among the New Line films for which he oversaw the music are the “Austin Powers” films, the “Rush Hour” film series, “Wedding Crashers,” “Hairspray,” “Sex and the City,” ”Elf,” “American History X,” “Wag The Dog,” “Blow,” “I Am Sam,” “About Schmidt,” “The Notebook,” “Blade: Trinity,” “A History of Violence,” “The New World,” “The Golden Compass” and “Frequency.”
Prior to New Line, Broucek worked with Fairlight Instruments of Australia to head up their U.S. operations before moving into the music supervision field and a long-term creative partnership with top music supervisor Evyen Klean, overseeing a mix of television and feature films.
Before that, Broucek was on recording staff at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, where he was a key member of the team responsible for the start-up of the studio’s film scoring division and the modernization and re-opening of Paramount Studios’ famed Stage M. He also served as President/General Manager of The Plant Studios in Sausalito, California.
Broucek began his film music career in San Francisco working on the landmark film “Apocalypse Now,” as an assistant engineer to Academy Award-winning sound designer and picture editor Walter Murch. # # #
